1.  Certified Public Accountant Schol.---AMOUNT---20 scholarships of up to $1,300.---DEADLINE---ACT test scores must be received in Topeka on or before March 7---ELIGIBILITY---you must plan to major in accounting, be a graduating senior who will attend a Kansas College and who has high ACT scores and a good resume of leadership activities.---GENERAL INFORMATION---All  you have to do to apply is have me send your ACT test scores to Topeka.  You will then receive a comprehensive questionnaire form that must be filled out and sent back by April 18.2

2.   Sigma Nu Excellence Scholarship---DEADLINE---Must be in Manhattan on or before March 8---AMOUNT---two $500 scholarships---GENERALINFORMATION---This KSU fraternity is looking for outstanding male high school seniors who exemplify excellence in leadership, academics and community involvement.  Applications are found online at www.k-state.edu/sigmanu.  

3.  Society of Professional Journalists Essay Scholarship---AMOUNT---$1,000---DEADLINE---Due on or before March 8---GENERAL INFORMATION---Must be a high school student.  Students must present original work and have  sponsoring teacher sign the entry form.---Applications—go to www.studentscholarships.org/scholarship.php4

4.   KACRAO SCHOLARSHIP---AWARD AMOUNT—4 awards of $250 (one will go to 4 yr. public school, one for a four year private, one to a community college and one to technical school).---DEADLINE---Must be postmarked on or before March 9. ---GENERAL INFORMATION---This award is designed to recognize the Quality Leadership of Kansas High School Seniors.  To apply you must be a Kansas High School Senior, Have good leadership experience, Have a 7 Semester GPA of at least 3.25, have at least a 22 on the ACT.  You also must plan to attend a KACRAO member institution and provide evidence of leadership experience.  You will have to write a one-page essay on one of two topics dealing with your leadership experiences.  You will need to get a teacher recommendation and a community leader recommendation as well as have me fill out a recommendation for you, plus a detailed resume.  Please get the completed application and letters to me by March 1  so that I can complete my part. 

 

5.  Senator Dole Public Service Scholarship---AMOUNT---128, $1,000 awards---DEADLINE---Must be received on or before March 9---ELIGIBILITY---High School Seniors in Kansas who have at least a 3.00 GPA and who are enrolled in a significant number of volunteer community service projects and who are enrolling as a full time student at a Regents University or Washburn.---GENERAL INFORMATION---for additional information and an application you must go to www.sms.scholarshipamerica.org/senatordolepublicservice

 

6.  Westar Energy Line Worker Scholarship---DEADLINE---Must be in Topeka on or before March 17---AMOUNT---2 awards of $6,000---GENERAL INFORMATION---High school senior planning to pursue a degree in Electric Power and Distribution in Kansas who is able to earn a CDL drivers license is eligible to apply.  If your application is accepted you must attend  a 2 day climbing camp  from either May 5-6 or May 12-13 in Topeka.---APPLICATION---Go to www.westarenergy.com  and follow the About us Link in the upper right corner, then go to the community service tab.  Starting salary for a lineman apprentice is $45,000.

 

7.  Westar Energy Power Plant Operator Scholarship--- DEADLINE---Must be in Topeka on or before March 17---AMOUNT--- $6,000---GENERAL INFORMATION---High school senior planning to pursue a degree in Power Plant Technology is eligible to apply.  If your application is accepted you must attend  a 2 day skills Test camp  from either May 5-6 in St. Marys Kansas.---APPLICATION---Go to www.westarenergy.com  and follow the About us Link in the upper right corner, then go to the community service tab.  Starting Salary for a power plant operator is $44,000.

 

8.  Primo Scholarship---AWARD AMOUNT---5 awards of $500---DEADLINE----Must be in Glen Elder on or before March 23---GENERAL INFORMATION---The only requirement for this scholarship is that the students’ parent/guardian is a customer of Cunningham Telephone and Cable and student must be planning to attend a kansas college, university or technical college.  Scholarship is generally awarded to a student going into Marketing, Public Relations or Telecommunications.  A one page essay will be required.  The topic will be:  What are the goals you have established for yourself and your efforts to establish these goals?  Give at least one specific example that demonstrates your work ethic/diligence. 

 

9.  Farmway FFA Scholarship---AWARD AMOUNT---one $500 scholarship from the Beloit Chapter---DEADLINE---Must be returned to Farmway Coop on or before March 30.---GENERAL INFORMATION---Awarded to a high school senior who is enrolled at any post high school institution.  Must be a member of the Beloit FFA Chapter and two recommendation letters are required.  The application consists of a one page essay, answering 5 questions about you and your future. 

 

10.  Farmway Producer Member Scholarship---AWARD AMOUNT---two $1,000 awards to seniors whose parent or guardian is an active Farmway producer member.---DEADLINE---Must be returned to Farmway Coop on or before March 30---GENERAL INFORMATION---Children of Farmway Co-op employees are not eligible to apply.  Applicants must attend an academic institution next school year.  Applicants must be majoring in a Agriculture related field.  Two recommendation letters will be required and a one page essay talking about “How I plan to contribute to Agriculture”. 

 

11.  Melvin File Memorial Scholarship---DEADLINE---Received at the Concannon house on or before March 30.----AMOUNT---six awards of $500---Eligibility----Must be a graduating senior planning a medical field of study.---Judging----Based on Academics, work experience and character.---General Information----There is an application form plus a one page essay stating your college and career goals, also including a life experience that influenced your goals.  Two letters of reference are required

12.  Eric Durham Memorial Scholarship----DEADLINE---I must have in my hands by the end of school March 30.----AWARD----one Award of $500.---General In

formation----This scholarship came to us from the Jewell school district.  Preferences will be given to a student who has chosen an agriculture major, however, all students are encouraged to apply.  The application basically consists of you writing at least one paragraph in answer to 4 different questions about you and your future. 

 

The next 3 scholarships are part of the Greater Salina Community Foundation Awards.  BHS seniors would be eligible to apply to these three.  Go to www.gscf.org to find the online application form.  All three are due in Salina on or before March 31 and no late applications will be accepted.  They will need to be typed online and printed then mailed in by deadline. 

 

13.  Olson Scholarship---DEADLINE---Due to NCK Technical college on or before March 31.---AMOUNT---one $475 scholarship---SELECTION---Must be currently attending or planning to attend NCK Technical College in Beloit.  Must be studying electrician, bricklaying, plumbing, heating and air conditioning. 

 

14.  Gustafson Scholarship---DEADLINE---Received in Concordia on or before March 31---AMOUNT---one $500 scholarship---SELECTION---Must be currently attending or planning to attend Cloud county Comm. college and working toward a degree in nursing or other medical field. 

 

15.  Milbrandt Scholarship---DEADLINE---Must be in Salina on or before March 31---General Information---Must attend either KSU or KU.  Must have maintained a 3.5 or better GPA.  Must have successfully participated in extracurricular activities. Must have exhibited a strong sense of community involvement.  Parents must provide evidence of financial need. 

16.  Jim Johnson Scholarship---DEADLINE---Must be received on or before April 1 in Hastings Nebraska.----Amount---One $500 award----General Information---A high school senior who is pursuing a career in one of the Physical sciences (Chemistry, Physics, Astromomy, Earth Science including Geology, hydrology, meteorology, oceanography and soil science).  Those going into the teaching profession of Physical Sciences may also apply.---How To Apply---need to provide an acceptance letter from a college with a physical science major, must write a one page essay stating what you plan to do in the physical sciences once degree is received and how it will contribute to your discipline.  Applications will be mailed to the national weather service office in Hastings, Nebraska. 

17.  NAIFA of The Heartland Scholarship---AWARD AMOUNT---one $1,000 Award.---DEADLINE---Must be postmarked on or before April 1---ELIGIBILITY---One student in Kansas will win.  Any high school senior who is pursuing a 2 or 4 year college degree or plans to attend a Technical school is eligible.  The scholarship is only awarded to students whose GPA falls between 2.5 and 3.75.---GENERAL INFORMATION---The application will be 1 page and there will be a 300 or less word essay. 

 

18.. Glen Elder Community Club Scholarship---DEADLINE---Must be hand delivered to Glen Elder on or before April 1---AMOUNT---2         scholarships of $300 each.---General Information---Must be a senior with a Glen Elder address.  Each applicant is expected to be involved in Glen Elder Community Club activities such as Easter Egg Hunt, Fun Day, Dhili Cook-off, Halloween Haunted House, Christmas lighting etc.  Also must be present at Fun Day or help with advance work for it.  Must have at least a 2.5 GPA.  Applicants can attend any kind of 1, 2 or 4 year institution after high school.  Applicants must answer 7 questions about him/her and submit a 100 word essay on “What Glen Elder means to me.”

 

19.  Helen Woody Babb Scholarship---DEADLINE is to be received in my office on or before April 1.   AWARD---Approximately $300 to be received by a graduating Beloit High School Senior.  SELECTION CRITERIA---25% ACT or SAT Composite Scores, 35% applicants curriculum, 20% Applicants financial need, and 15% Character.

 

20.  Kansas Junior Golf---DEADLINE---Must be received in Lawrence on or before April 2---AWARD AMOUNT---5 awards of $5,000 each---GENERAL INFORMATION---This is an academic not athletic award, but you must have participated in Jr. golf activities including high school golf.  Selection is based on academics, leadership, Character, an essay and on financial need.  3 letters of recommendation are required and the essay of no more than 2 pages is on why you deserve the award and on how you have benefited from the game of golf and talk about your goals.  Additional details and an application is found at www.kansasgolf.org (click on Kansas Golf Foundation and follow the links for “scholarships”.

 

21.  County Clerks Scholarship---DEADLINE---Must be received by Chris Treaster at the Mitchell County Clerk’s office on or before April 3.---AWARD AMOUNT---10 awards of $500---ELIGIBILITY---High School seniors who have at least a 3.0 GPA are eligible to apply.  Applicants must be planning a major in Journalism, Political Science or Communications.  You must hand write an essay explaining your goals for using journalism, political science or communications in your life.  This application will require 2 letters of recommendation. 

 

22.  Sobriety rocks----DEADLINE---April 13---Award Amount---$1,000 for best song, $1000 for best art, $1,000 for best writing, $1,000 for best commercial.---General Information---Sobriety Rocks is a way for young people to use their creative talents to inspire their peers to be safe.  Judges are looking for unique, powerful anti-underage drinking messages, creativity and passion.  Go to www.sobrietyrocksks.net for rules, entry forms and posters, and also to see previous winner’s work. 

 

23.  USD 273 Endowment Scholarships----DEADLINE---must be received at the Board office on or before April 16---AMOUNT---Many awards of up to $8,000.---GENERAL INFO---Submit one application and apply for everything.---SELECTION---Grades, Activities, Essay, Leadership, NEED, Follow directions. 

 

American Legion Scholarships.

 

    I.             DR. IRVIN "CLICK" COWGER LEGION SCHOLARSHIP(Green)

ELIGIBILITY--- A boy who has participated in Kansas American Legion Baseball.  He must be at least an average student scholastically and only high school seniors, college level freshmen or sophomores may apply.  This is worth  one award of $500. APPLY--- the American legion headquarters in Topeka must receive Application by July 15.  There needs to be 3 letters of recommendation--one from a former coach.  An essay of between 250 and 500 words on "Why I Want To Go To College" must also be written.

 

J.              PAUL E. FLAHERTY ATHLETIC SCHOLARSHIP(Lt. Blue)

ELIGIBILITY---any boy or girl who has participated in some form of High School Athletics.  The applicant must be at least an average or better student scholastically and only high school seniors, college level freshmen or sophomores may apply.  This is worth one award of $250. APPLY--- the American legion headquarters in Topeka must receive Application by July 15.  There needs to be 3 letters of recommendation--one from a former coach.  An essay of between 250 and 500 words on "Why I Want To Go To College" must also be written.

 

N.  American Legion Baseball Leadership Scholarship---DEADLINE---Must be received in Topeka on or before July 15---AMOUNT---one $1,000 scholarship awarded to an American Legion certified baseball player whose name appears on the American Legion Baseball’s Form #1 that has been filed with National Headquarters. 

 

 

24.  AES Engineering Scholarship---DEADLINE---Must be received on or before October 5, 2012.---AMOUNT---$500.----GENERAL INFORMATION----They believe that  achieving a high GPA should not be the only criteria for determining who deserves to be helped.  For that reason we are offering a scholarship that will be awarded on the basis of character, as determined by the essay that you must write.---APPLICATION---Go to www.aesengineers.ocm/scholarships to find the application.  You must write no more than 1000 words on, What are your dreams for your future? When you look back on your life in thirty years, what would it take for you to consider your life successful?---this is open to seniors and current students attending a post secondary institution.

Coming Events:

 

Financial Aid due for most colleges before March 1.

 

 

Letter of Applications:  1st paragraph= talk about yourself (your family, your goals, your major, and where you will be next year, 5 years, 10 years, etc.)

                2nd paragraph=talk about your high school academic accomplishments (GPA, Dual Credit, AP, Major classes, perfect attendance)   

                3rd paragraph = School and community Involvement, Leadership offices held, work experience.

                4th paragraph = Talk about Why you should win this scholarship.  Why should you be picked over all of your classmates?  What makes you special?  Brag!  This is the most important Part of the essay. 

 

College Goal Sunday--- Sunday Feb. 12, There are many locations but the closest to us would be Cloud County Community College.  Stop by between 2 and 4 p.m. This is a chance to take your parents, your tax returns and your pin number and get your FAFSA done and submitted all in one setting.  They will provide help to anyone needing assistance filling out the paper work.
